Intervention, 19.4.2016, Gallery Jakopič, Ljubljana

The project ALUO MMXVI is conceptualised as a reaction to the exhibition ALUO LXX: Past, Present, Future that marks the 70th anniversary of the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Ljubljana, Slovenia. If the Academy as an institution is usually seen as “producing” students (artists, designers, etc.) through its study program, the project ALUO MMXVI attempts to intervene into this study program (and its exhibition) by turning the same logic upside down and explicating its other side, namely a process by which the students are always actively producing (or reproducing) the Academy with their work. The project also supplements and challenges the official history of the institution (Academy) as presented at the mentioned exhibition by pointing out the unwritten history of self-organized student initiatives in the context of the Academy. The project takes the form of a school, carried out as a one-day program of lectures substituting regular study courses at the Academy. The program consists of a talk focusing on the question of learning and self-organized educational practices in the context of contemporary art and wider social, political and economic processes, and five lectures by young professionals from the field (some of them former students of the Academy) who are invited to discuss topics and discourses that are not yet sufficently (or not at all) represented in the current study program of the Academy.
